Our Lords Final steps ALONE
1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. 4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. 5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled. 6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired. 7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy. 11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them. 12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? 13 And they cried out again, Crucify him. 14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him. 15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.
Mark 15 verse 2, Pilate asks Jesus if he’s the King of Jews? This is a very good question and is a QUESTION that every living person should ask themselves…
Is Jesus the King of Jews, The Messiah, or rather OUR SAVIOR!
Before Pilate asked Jesus twice if He was King of the Jews, the Jewish Leaders did the same thing at midnight the night before. Let’s turn back a few pages to see how the Chief Priest Caiaphas and the elders and the scribes question Jesus as to whom Jesus’ identity truly is:
61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Clearly we can see several important things in this text:
1. Jesus was asked twice if he was the Son of God. The second time he was asked, Jesus didn’t deny that he was Christ and in fact he uses a term that only God refers to Himself as; “I AM”
2. The Jewish Leaders felt intimidated, in that they felt their POWER would be stripped.
3. Jesus was alone amongst his enemies
1. In Exodus 3:14 God refers to Himself as “I AM”
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
After hearing this, the high priest rents his clothes…
But by Jesus answering as he did made it clear that His position with his Father is sitting on the right hand of POWER!
110 “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
This means that Jesus just told them that He will soon be the Judge over them.
Do you suppose he will be very merciful at that time, when they face to face with their Judge - Jesus…?
2. The Jewish Leaders felt intimidated by Jesus and what he was doing.
“And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.” (Mark 15:1)
The Jewish leaders immediately wanted to get rid of Jesus simply because they couldn’t comprehend who Jesus was. John 3, Nicodemus came to him at night and called Jesus Master (TEACHER). So you can see that the other religious leaders could not see Jesus for who he was in spite of Jesus Miracles.
The Jewish religion is based on a savior that will remove them from bondage and reestablish a new form of governement. But what they didn’t realize is that Jesus was doing so in a spiritual manner. The bonds is our SIN and we are being set free to become part of a Spiritual Kingdom, one that is not made by human hands but by God himself through his Spirit of his WORD.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Jewish religion is still waiting for the Messianic revelation to come true today. And Yes Jesus will come as he stated in verse 62)
“and coming in the clouds of heaven.”
This time they will not mistake Him since Jesus will establish new order on earth as a Judge as in:
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
3. Jesus was alone among His enemies.
Where were his disciples when all this was going on?
50 And they all forsook him, and fled.
The truth is they were afraid of what the Jewish Leaders were going to do to them, since they showed up with swords and in force. Sometimes we will be challenged at times to stand up for the cause of Christ and what He stands for, will you turn and flee.
Did you know in the Gospel of Mark there is a streaker noted in the Bible?
51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
They say that the Streaker was the author of this Gospel (Mark). Perhaps, it gave him reason to remain away from the immediate trial that Jesus was going through because he needed to go home and get some clothes on? We just know of only one that went to check on Jesus and that was Peter.
In the end Peter was found out three times and he ultimately forsook Jesus these three times before the cock crowed early that next morning.
Will you stand for Jesus this morning and forever?
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
