We Must First Receive Faith

The Healing of a Boy With an Evil Spirit

Mark 9:14-29

14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

KJV

The context of this message is: God wants to ESTABLISH you and KEEP you in His Kingdom!

Jesus must come into your life to ESTABLISH you in His Kingdom!

He Must be 1st in your life, in all matters in order to strengthen you to abide in His will!

14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

  •    What do you think the teachers of the law were arguing with the disciples about?

  •   It seems that these scribes were more interested in the discipleís inability to heal the demon possessed boy than the welfare of the boy himselfÖ
  •   Now Jesus gave authority to his disciples to heal the sick, cleans leper, cast out devils:

10 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

  •   (Matt 10:1) KJV
  •   So what happened to this ability given by Jesus?

15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.

  •   Why were the people so ďAmazedĒ with the presence of Jesus?

a-mazd':A term which illustrates the difficulty of expressing in one English word the wide range of startled emotion, wonder, astonishment, awe, covered, in the Old Testament, by four Hebrew words and in the New Testament by as many Greek words. Its Scripture originals range in meaning from amazement accompanied with terror and trembling to an astonishment full of perplexity, wonder, awe and joyous surprise. It is the word especially used to show the effect of Christ's miracles, teaching, character and Divine personality on those who saw and heard Him, and were made conscious of His supernatural power (Mt 12:23: "All the multitudes were amazed"). The miracles of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit's bestowal of the gift of tongues produced the same universal wonder (Ac 2:7: "They were all amazed and marveled").

  •   As the Son of God, Jesus exercised authority over all realms. The Gospel of Matthew, in the eight and ninth chapter, relates many different areas over which Jesus demonstrated His authority. The point of recording these various miracles is to show that Jesus is Lord of every realm imaginable - He is Lord of all!

My personal favorite: Jesus Has Authority Over The Forgiveness Of Sins to make us wholeÖ

  •    This account is found in Matthew 9:1-8. In the episode of healing a paralyzed man at Capernaum, Jesus showed that His authority extended to the forgiveness of sins.

16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?

  •   Verse 17 & 18 explains why: the dad of the possessed boy had brought his son to Jesus, but when Jesus was not available he had asked the disciples if they would cast out the demon. But the disciples were unable to cast out the dumb spirit.
  •   But donít you think that Jesus understood what the problem was before he asked, of course. The reason for this question is intended for the audience to make it clear to what the REAL PROBLEM was and what the REAL SOLUTION is for the disciples.
  •  Also, drawing attention to himself with a question pulls the lime light of his disciples and directs the attention back to the true subject matter: The Boy who is possessed by the dumb spirit (demon)
  •   Today there are many kids that have their lives all jacked up and need attention. Satan can possess many individuals today through the influence of drugs.
    •    Drugs tear up a body, they look like zombies all banged up with injuries that they themselves have no clue how they got them.
    •    Have you ever wonder what a kid appears like when they have overdosed on drugs?
    •    When a kid ODís they will gnash their teeth and foam out there mouth.
    •   In these cases a spiritual awakening is needed to purge that evil present, Jesus needs to be there!

HEART of THE MESSAGE

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

  •   ďO faithless generationĒ, implies that there is no reliance on GOD for His provision & moreover a reliance of self.
  •   It seems to be despair over the fact that the disciples were having a hard time moving in the power of the Spirit.  Perhaps the disciples were forgetting that they need to focus on Godís   ability & not of their own power and ability.
  •   There was a sense of frustration over the fact that He is preparing them for being without him, and that they are not learning the things He wants them to grasp to be able to minister without His physical presence being there.

Letís think of the context of where He is at with the training of the twelve.

1)    By this time he has trained the twelve and sent them out in teams of two.

2)    He has trained them to preach and do the Works of the Father, namely healing the sick and the casting out of demons.

3)    They have been with him at the feeding of the 5000 and the 4000 when he expected them to do it, he had said ďyou give them something to eat.Ē

4)    He is at a point in His training of them where He wants to multiply them and send out ministry teams of 36 teams into many of the cities of Israel.  Luke, in his parallel passage slots this incident just before he sends out the 72 by teams of two (Luke 10).

Simple Truth:

By Faith in God, He establishes and strenghten his people to abide in Him:

  •    This is true firm the Old Testament and New TestamentÖ
  •    SOME EXAMPLES in the OLD TESTAMENT:
    •    (Hebrews 11:11-12) Sara, Abrahamís wife, faith when promised an heir in her old age.
    •    (Joshua 14:6-14) Caleb receives Hebron.
    •    (1 Samuel 14:6) Jonathanís confidence in Godís power to defeat the Philistines.
    •    (1 Sam 17:32-47) Davidís confidence in Godís power to over come Goliath.
    •    ALL THE NEW TESTAMENT miracles were very much designed to Establish and Strengthen his people and to Further His Kingdom!

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

  •  We can see this Dad wanted for Jesus to Strengthen his faith in God! So seeing Jesus perform this miracle he will be able to solidify his Faith in God and be established unwaivering, without doubt that Jesus is the who He is, the Son of God!!!

6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:6 KJV

1)    Jesus cares about individuals.  Every single person is worth more than the world to Him.  Of infinite value is a single life.  We must take great care of the individuals that He has given to us.  He will not give us more than we are able to care for as a Church.  Our ability to reap and get our harvest into barns (small groups) is what limits us in our growth.

2)    Jesus loves expressions of faith in His power.  He is passionate about training us to move out from our resources to His power.  It was not coincidence that here was a demonized person and Jesus was not there.  Jesus feels strongly about our reliance on the Holy Spirit.  He wants us to learn to get beyond our comfort level into total reliance on Him.  We often want all our Iís dotted and tís crossed before we will get beyond leaning on our own knowledge and totally launching into God honoring faith.

3)    It teaches us the supernaturalness of the Christian. Matthew 11:11 talks about John the Baptist, saying ďthere has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.Ē  I want to be naturally supernatural.

Why had the nine disciples failed in casting out the demon? (This kind of cure demanded prayer). In effect he was saying to them that they did not live close enough to God. They had been equipped with power, but it needed prayer to maintain it.

God may have given us a gift but unless we maintain close contact with Him it may wither and die.

Unless we maintain this contact with God we lose two things however great our gift is.

1)    We lose Vitality.  There is a living power that flows through us when we have contact with God in prayer. We lack a certain something when it is just our intellect.  Itís called the anointing of God, the presence of the Spirit within us.

2)    We lose Humility.  We tend to think this gift is just our cleverness.  The enemy gets in and we get puffed up in pride.  We often donít see it ourselves.

If Faith pleases God, how do we operate more faithfully?

  • ō  The order is that we first must Believe in His Son Jesus Christ and through that Saving Faith Godís Divine Holy Spirit enters into us. This is the doing of God 100% and not of us. Often what Christ is requesting from us, He has to give it to us firstly! And he Has, He has given us His Son Christ Jesus.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8 KJV

  •   Godís order in faith:
  •   Faith is the quality of the Fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22&23)
  •   Faith comes by the hearing the Word of God! (Romans 10:17)
  •   We can ask Christ to increase our faith. (Luke 17:1-6)
  •   Confess our unbelief to Christ and request His help to overcome it. (Mark 9:14-25). Thank goodness we have the Holy Spirit to help guide us as we practice and exercise our faith. We become more faithful, by recognizing what God has faithfully done for us. Only the power of the Spirit reveals God in the matter. Those who feed on Godís faithfulness will be strengthened and become more faithful as result.
  •  And we can grow in Faith! (Romans 4:20 & Psalms 37:3)
